about

Guitarist Dennis Winge, who is based in upstate New York, has frequently led his own trios, performing everything from straight ahead jazz to rock, pop music and sacred chanting. However Just The One Of Us is something much different, a set of unaccompanied acoustic guitar solos.

Winge’s mastery of the guitar, which finds him playing not just solos and chords but, via occasional overdubs, a bass line at the same time, is a bit reminiscent of Joe Pass in how he makes his guitar sound like an orchestra. Unlike Pass, Winge is also a skilled composer and on this CD he performs 15 of his own originals.

When one thinks of a set of unaccompanied acoustic guitar solos, it is easy to imagine that this program would be dominated by ballads, but that is far from the truth. Dennis Winge performs at a wide variety of tempos and moods, giving Just The One Of Us more variety than one would expect.

Among the highlights are the cheerful and witty “Rocks In Your Shoes,” the bluesy strut “What We Do Sometimes,” his virtuosic display ion the uptempo “New York Inn,” the advanced chords that the guitarist gives the haunting “Lydia” and the soulfulness that he expresses on “Funkination.” Each selection has its own rewards including “Arabian Nights” (which definitely has a Mid-Eastern feel), the atmospheric “Liquid Universe,” the exciting uptempo blues “Blues Mayhem” and “I Wonder,” a likable tune with one of the strongest melodies of the program.

Even on the more laidback pieces, there are no slow moments on Just The One Of Us, with each selection containing its own subtle surprises and heated moments. This enjoyable set is easily recommended not only to lovers of the acoustic guitar but to anyone interested in creative improvised music.
