My son thinks it’s disgusting to use computer-generated instrument tracks, even if they are realistic in sound as well as style. I also never would have thought that I’d be making albums with a full band where I was the only musician. On my previous album “For Music Geeks Only” I used virtual drums and I worked out great, so this time I generated / programmed drums, piano, percussion, and even upright bass on 1 track.

Doing an album this way has its advantages. For one thing, tunes like “5 Had 6” and “Polyrhythmic Blues” would have been very challenging to rehearse and perform with musicians. And besides, perhaps the pendulum can now swing the other way because I’ve also done two double-albums where we recorded all the tracks live in the studio in less than three days (“What Are the Odds?” and “One Small Step.”)

Regardless of the machine vs. human debate, “Sketches” is my 8th instrumental album to date, and the main point is simply to showcase the compositions, hence the title. Let me know what you think. :)
